80th Anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein in Egypt
with Western Desert Battlefield Tours, October 2022.

This was my second tour of the battlefield, although this time my desert expert friend, Steve Hamilton was unable to travel so he asked me to guide for him. The tour encompassed many different places and covered many of the major battle positions.  Our Egyptian host travel company ensured a comprehensive and well planned trip.  Most participants had relatives that fought or died at El Alamein.
Much to the guests amusement,  I wore my 8th army uniform for the main battlefield day.

"The ‘Lone Rat’ captained my recent bucket-list tour of the El Alamein Battlefields. Richard’s personable approach and knowledgeable insights, and familiarity with the battlesites, made for an excellent and most enjoyable Western Desert Battlefield Tour —no mean feat considering he had a diverse group of Commonwealth ‘troops’, Brits, and an American, under ‘command’, all with our personal agendas for being there. Among us were the sons and daughters of those who fought in the Battle of El Alamein, grandchildren of the same, two fine young boys whose parents were giving them an essential heritage experience, experienced former military personel with regimental affiliation with the battles, and well informed Desert War hobby historians . . . all of whom, under Richard’s lead collaborated and contributed stories and insights for the benefit of all as we walked over the sacred territory. In some small way the tour invoked among us the spirit and humour of our 8th Army forebears in an ongoing friendship, which has us asking, “When can we meet again, where will we go next? Libya, Tunisia?” Richard’s wit and humour, and wonderful penchant for dressing the part as my photo shows had us almost believing we were back in those fateful days."       Graham Fletcher, New Zealand.

"Well done Richard! Keeping the enthusiasm going for 10 days on the battlefield, getting everyone in the group involved and always getting us to the right place at the right time!

Nice accessible level of the El Alamein (and wider desert campaign) story developed as the tour went on in a relaxed fashion.

Touring a battlefield with some who has personal connections that can understand others who also do is an immense bonus..... Richard clearly knows his stuff and enjoys it..... it doesn't take much for that enthusiasm to spread around the group.

Great tour..... well done!"          Neil Walker, Guernsey
